ForThePatient.org is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit publishing independent quality scores for all 48,000+ Medicare-certified healthcare facilities in the United States — hospitals, nursing homes, dialysis centers, home health agencies, hospices, inpatient rehab, and long-term care.
Our mission is to empower patients with transparent, data-driven information so they can choose where to receive care.
How we're different
Zero industry funding. No facility revenue, no pharma donations, ever.
Compulsory data only. We use government-mandated reporting from CMS — never self-reported quality claims.
Complete methodological transparency. Every formula is public.
Exponential recency decay. Our scores surface current quality, not historical averages.
Our scoring
Each facility receives a composite score from 1.0 to 10.0, built from 4–5 weighted components specific to that facility type. Hospitals are scored on mortality & safety, infections, patient outcomes, timeliness, and patient experience. Nursing homes layer in inspection deficiencies, verified staffing, complaints, and ownership accountability. Every component is derived from public CMS datasets and runs through the same percentile-ranking machinery.
